Gem Setting Training
Gem setting is a disappearing skill in New Zealand. With a significant lack of rigorous training opportunities, the gem setting industry is limited to a handful of older, skilled gem setters. Jewellery houses today outsource their gem setting needs.
Our trade certified setter/jeweller, Paul Greenfield has been in the gem setting trade since 1989 starting as a trainee with Anvil Jewellers.
Over the years Paul has honed his skill while contracting to Kiwi jewellery manufacturers and has done stints working for a New Zealand renowned boutique jewellery house as their Master Setter and Workshop Manager where he was able to upskill their workshop, train and work with exceptionally talented setters.
Our passion for people and craft has inspired us to grow a next generation of setters. Doing so allows us to recognize and encourage talent, create opportunities for young people to discover their creative ability and keep skilled trade work in New Zealand.
Over the past year we have facilitated two rounds of 'Introduction to Gem Setting' trainings and have loved meeting talented individuals while teaching as well as learning more about running training workshops. Our workshop, located on the main drag in Papakura is equipped with the ability to train two students at a time. This intimate setting allows students to benefit from one-on-one instruction and individualized support.
If you are interested in gem setting, please see our dates for our 2025 training schedule. We look forward to welcoming you then. We are available to answer any queries you may have in the meanwhile.
